What I Won't Be Wearing Tonight

Previously mentioned a time or two, I just wanted you all to be able to see what I won't be wearing tonight, because the invitation reads:

You are invited to a special dinner and awards night!

Dress: Semi-Casual

In an earlier post, I gave the following definition of casual:

Casual = Nicer, but still fairly relaxed. Due to geographical variations, I prefer to not define this category too precisely. Lunch with your boss, your pastor, or your grandma requires casual clothing. Business casual fits here.

Now, in High School semi-formal meant that instead of being able to wear something special, you wore an everyday dress; and your chances were about zero that your date would be wearing anything nice at all. And my daughter reminds me that a semi-circle is half a circle. So, what does that make semi-casual? Something half as nice as what you would wear to lunch with your grandma.

Yet another dinner where I can't feel appropriately dressed in anything but jeans. Somehow, I don't think that was the effect they were after.

Oh! This is so funny! What DID you wear then? Sweat pants with paint stains and tank top?

We received an invitation to an outdoor wedding with "dressy casual" as the dress code. There was everything from nice dresses to shorts and T-shirts accesorized with a beer can in hand. We call it a redneck wedding anytime the guests walk into the wedding with a beer. Yipes!

At least they could have accessorized with something more classy, like a latte. Wonder what those weddings are called?

Hrm. I'd put NOT jeans in the semi-casual category for a lady.

For semi-casual, I generally wear one of my Sunday/everyday dresses

Right now, my husband and I are having discussions over what I should wear to a friend's wedding. It's a 4:30 wedding, but they specify "black tie" -- which means tux for him. And I think it means a "ballroom" type dress for me (I've got this green thing I wore for going away from my own wedding). My husband thinks dressier dress will be good enough. But I'm afraid that with the guys in tuxedos that would be too dressed down.

So you have actually heard of semi-casual? I honestly never had and I've been kind of mocking it. The "principal" is from Western Washington, is it a commonly used term over there?

The outfit I wore was one that I would wear to church, hence my lamenting (again) my lack of opportunities to dress up.

I'm so excited for you to have the opportunity to go ball-gown to your friend's wedding! I totally agree with you about it. Your husband probably just doesn't want you to be distressed about having to dress up, but if you already have something ... Are you excited about wearing the green thing again?

Thanks for dropping by! :)

Yep! Semi-casual seems to be fairly common.

And yes, I'm in Western Washington.

Oh I'm not distressed at all! I loved this dress, just haven't had a lot of opportunities to wear it. (As long as I can still wear it in the end of August. Lots of things could happen. I could be pregnant. Or I could lose enough weight it doesn't fit -- but if it doesn't fit neither will the other)

PS green is my favorite color. Not the mint green of this dress. But it's the closest I could find for what I wanted for a going-away dress. (I know, how foolish to buy TWO dresses for a wedding... But I had didn't want to take the wedding dres to dinner, etc. It brushed against the ground and was impossible to go to the restroom in without help. And it was a pretty tame dress as wedding dresses go!
